Our mission

Here at Warbird Restorations we are on a mission to bring back significant historic aircraft wrecks from their respective WW2 battlegrounds, and bring those magnificent machines back to life as flyable commemorations of the young service personnel who went to war to protect our liberties and preserve the values of western democracies the world over.

To accomplish this quest is no 'walk in the park'. It requires conviction, dedicated research, commitment and at times, exposure to certain levels of personal danger. And that is before the restoration work ever starts!

To be able to guarantee to a customer that their special aircraft can and will be restored correctly, requires a broad cross section of facilities ranging from the obvious first class tooling and equipment, CAD design capability, CNC manufacturing etc, coupled with a stable team of committed artisans who themselves, have a passion for the work that they carry out and the history behind it.

A part of the commitment side of producing these outcomes, is the willingness to go back to remote sites in places like Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, to visit those places where these aircraft operated from. This brings access not just to aircraft wrecks and parts, but to an appreciation of the conditions under which these aircraft operated and in which their crews fought for survival.

This immersion into this critical time in history, underscores a big part of the 'why' we do what we do, and why it is so important for us to get it right.

Managing history

We recognise that our role here is not to produce brand new copies of 1940s aircraft.  Yes, we do have that capability, but it all ceases to be relevant if we lose sight of the reason we do this, which is to keep alive as much of that historic aircraft as possible. To allow it to fly again and be able to tell its stories and the stories of the deeds of those heroes who built, flew and maintained these special machines when the world was in total chaos.

So there may be a lot of new metal under that coat of fresh paint, but beneath the skin lie the real stories that we are duty-bound to tell. Having been to those battlegrounds, having pulled these veteran combatants from the broken trees and mounded earth that tried to bury them forever, means that for us, it is absolutely essential that their real identities and their real stories are kept alive. With this in mind, every effort is made to learn exactly what they looked like when they flew in anger, in order to return them to service exactly as they were when it mattered the most.
